What to check before you buy
- Test data, not adjectives. Which standard, which substance, over how many litres? "Removes 99% of everything" without a standard means nothing.
- PFAS claims. Independent research shows carbon filters reduce PFAS by very different amounts (73% on average in one study; Herkert et al., 2020). Trust only products with a published PFOA/PFOS test.
- Microplastics claims. These are usually based on a particle test (NSF/ANSI 42, Class I). Ask for it.
- Your existing tap. Does it connect to it, or do you need a second faucet and a hole in the worktop?
- Cost per year. Cartridge price × cartridges per year, not just the starter price.
- Housing material and pressure range, especially in older buildings.
